Foreplay (2014) is a thought-provoking multimedia installation that investigates the profound influence of technology and consumer culture on contemporary intimacy and self-perception. Here, Hovnanian critiques the pervasive role of technology in our lives, illustrating how it often acts as a barrier to authentic interaction in moments traditionally meant to foster closeness. The installation evokes the irony of our longing for connection juxtaposed with our willingness to allow technology to intervene, resulting in a sense of isolation in situations designed for intimacy.

Through this work, Hovnanian invites viewers to reflect on how technology has reshaped the dynamics of personal relationships, emphasizing that while we seek connection, we often find ourselves further disconnected by the very tools designed to enhance our communication.

Hovnanian’s work explores how digital devices disrupt genuine human relationships, highlighting the tension between personal connection and the omnipresence of screens, smartphones and technological distractions.
