Requiem (Gate) (2021-2022) is a series of large-scale paintings that delve into themes of migration, death, and the sea. The title serves as a tribute to emigrants who have died or disappeared, reflecting on broader notions of loss and absence. Capote incorporates gold leaf into his iconic seascapes, enhancing their visual impact while drawing from his Cuban heritage to address universal experiences through symbolic materials and imagery, with the sea representing both a barrier and a graveyard.

A central motif in Requiem is the use of fishhooks, which are embedded within the seascapes

to symbolize the perilous journeys migrants undertake and the tension between hope and danger. These hooks provide a visceral connection to the struggle inherent in migration, reinforcing the duality of the sea as both a lifeline and a deadly risk.

Through his series, Capote invites reflection on the human experience of migration and the often-tragic consequences that accompany it.
